Yorkshire terrier is the father-breed of Teacup Yorkie. In the early 1870s, Yorkshire Terriers were mainly bred to hunt rats in England. Later in the 1880s, they were brought to the USA. They were then cross-bred with small species to make miniature versions, hence the Teacup Yorkie. As little as they can be, they can have an engaging personality. They depict their first breed, Yorkshire terrier’s qualities.
Qualities and traits of Teacup Yorkie
These cute toy puppies are very protective of their families. They bond quite well with their owners and need a lot of attention. Don’t let the size fool you. It requires very high maintenance. A teacup Yorkie usually needs professional grooming. Well, since they are considered a toy breed in the USA, a lot of them buy this breed in the hope of professionally grooming them and keeping them as accessories. When we say high maintenance, they need to be taken care of. They have very regular and strict feeding schedules. Due to the small size they seem to be pretty much prone to sicknesses quickly. They are a crossed breed and do not have robust and steady health.
A fully-grown Teacup Yorkie can weigh between 2 to 4 pounds. They also don’t grow taller than 5 to 7 inches. They are tiny. They have a fur coat similar to Yorkshire terriers. Their coats are fine and shiny and are in two shades. They come in black & gold, black & tan, blue & gold, blue & tan. These long straight coats need to be trimmed and maintained for a neater look.
They do have proportionate body parts compared to the size of their heads. They have V-shaped ears that pop right up. Their small size affects their personality a lot. They usually think they are more significant than their size, causing them to be anxious and exciting at the same time.
Can you train a Teacup Yorkie?
They can be trained very well. You might find them a little stubborn at first. But if you start at an early stage to train them with positive reinforcement, they are quite trainable. Avoid yelling at them and screaming. That can cause anxiety and end up not being taught.
Diet and feeding of Teacup Yorkie
Teacup Yorkie is a small-sized dog. Generally, they need about 40 calories per pound of their entire body weight. Therefore, a normal-sized dog needs approximately 160 calories maximum. Be careful not to feed them food that is high in carbs because they cannot handle obesity. Look for high-quality dog food for these cute pooches. As mentioned before, they are high maintenance pups! But if you spend money to get one, you might as well take care of it properly. It is worth the extra money you spend on proper food than spending time in dog clinics when they get sick.
Teacup Yorkie: Fits right inside a cup!
Buying a Teacup Yorkie can be quite costly. It can cost you anywhere between 800USD to 10,000USD. Even the lowest is a bit expensive than other breeds. No matter how costly they are, they have become one of the most popular toy breeds in the USA. Since they have a good lifespan for a teacup puppy, which is about 8-9 years, they are worth the investment if you are keen on buying one.
