Can dogs eat blueberries?

Simple, the answer is yes. Blueberries are healthy and safe for dogs as it is suitable for humans. Blueberries will never put your dog in any danger.  

Officially blueberry defines as a “fleshy fruit produced from a single ovary,” mainly native to North America, Most Asian countries, and Scandinavia. Blueberry grows in the wild before people started to farm and make it a commercial product. Centuries ago, the blueberry bush was food, medicine, a spiritual symbol for humankind, including leave to root.

Are all dogs lucky enough to taste blueberry fruit? 

The answer is not really. The plant does not grow everywhere on the planet. It is limited, and only a few lucky dogs or must say some pet dogs must have been privileged to taste the fruit.

Why blueberry so healthy and suitable for dogs? 

Naturally, it contains all the antioxidants, fiber, and phytochemicals and which will improve their immune system to fight with any disease even with cancer and, this is the reason that blueberries are as good as any fruit and safe food for any living species. Also, blueberries are low in calories and will not gain any weight or obesity.

Blueberry fruit is full of vitamins and nutrients that will give health boasts, and most kind dogs are small and soft, so they are not in danger. The best advice is to consult the veterinarian before sharing human foods with the dog. Too much fiber will lead to gastrointestinal upset and diarrhea, so you need to be careful with that and need to keep your dog away from your blueberry farm.

Artificially flavored blueberry products do not provide the same, and it could be harmful because most products contain chemicals, preservatives, and those will make your dog sick.

How can you feed your dog?

Your veterinarian will consult the amount your dog can have at a time where will not affect the health of your dog severely. Mainly two types you can feed blueberries to your dog which are;

  • Mash or blend and feed as a smoothie
  • Feed the raw blueberries

You don’t have to cut them because blueberries are small but will have chocking issues occasionally for little ones. It is vital to find organic blueberries that not exposed to herbicides or pesticides. There are plenty of blueberries that included dog foods in the market if it is tough for you to find the natural fruit.

Some dogs find blueberries bit bitter some unpleasant; you may add some sugar or honey to the smashed portion of blueberries. Below are some alternative fruits you may feed to your friend in case your dog does not like blueberries.  

  • Banana
  • Strawberry
  • Apple
  • Peach
  • Cantaloupe

It is not a must to feed blueberries or fruits to your dog, but it will strengthen the health and extended living of your dog without any disease troubles. Therefore, make it a habit of feeding them fruits under your dog’s veterinarian consultation.
